01

Norfolk Beginnings

Born Timothy Z. Mosley in Norfolk, Virginia, the young beatmaker known as DJ Timmy Tim cut his teeth spinning records and building rhythms that didn't sound like anything else on the radio. It was here, in the 757, that a singular musical language began to take shape.

02

Da Bassment & The Swing Mob

Alongside Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, Playa, and Magoo, Timbaland became the sonic architect of DeVante Swing's Swing Mob. In cramped, chaotic nightshift sessions, an entire generation of R&B and hip-hop was reprogrammed from the ground up.

03

Aaliyah, Missy & Ginuwine

'Pony,' 'One in a Million,' 'The Rain': stuttering drums, negative space, and otherworldly swing. His production didn't just make hits, it invented a whole new grammar for rhythm the industry still borrows from today.

04

The Pop Era

Justin Timberlake's 'Justified' and 'FutureSex/LoveSounds,' Nelly Furtado's 'Loose,' and his own 'Shock Value.' Timbaland took his sound to the top of the charts and became one of the most in-demand producers in the world.

05

Statesman & Verzuz

From co-creating Verzuz to mentoring a new generation and launching the Timbaland Way movement, Tim keeps shaping culture. A true super producer never stops building the future.

06

Still In The Lab

Now Timbaland is more connected to the culture than ever. Straight from his own social channels, he shares the process in real time, discovering new talent, previewing unreleased music, and pulling back the curtain on how records get made. He's still cutting records, still mentoring the next generation, and still pushing the future of music and technology forward. The King is still in the lab.

The first origin was an accident.

At fourteen, Tim Mosley was working a shift at a Norfolk Red Lobster when a coworker's gun went off. The bullet left him partially paralyzed for nine months. Stuck in a body that would not cooperate, he taught himself to DJ with the only hand that still worked, his left. That is the real birth of the stutter. A producer who built an entire style around the beat refusing to move the way you expect it to.

The Scene That Raised A Sound

He never did it alone. Late 1980s Virginia Beach was quietly incubating one of the most important music scenes in modern history. Teddy Riley was the local legend everyone measured themselves against. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were forming what would become The Neptunes. Pusha T and Malice were friends from high school who would become Clipse. And Missy Elliott was the creative other half Tim would build his entire early catalog around. Jodeci's DeVanté Swing discovered Tim and Missy together and pulled them into the Swing Mob collective. It took a single Aaliyah demo to convince a label to sign them both in 1996. That same year, Ginuwine's 'Pony' and Aaliyah's One in a Million landed, and the sound that put the 757 on the map was already rewriting the rules.

Silence, weaponized.

What made the production revolutionary was not only what he added, the baby coos, the clicks, the gasps, the tongue pops, the video game blips. It was what he left out. He built beats around negative space and let silence do as much work as the 808. That skeletal, syncopated approach did not just define an era of R&B and hip-hop. It rewired what a whole generation of producers thought a beat was even allowed to sound like.

The chapter still being written.

Genre experiments most careers never attempt. Yellow (2024), a meditation album made with German handpan player Malte Marten, and Timbo Progression (2025), a largely instrumental Afrobeat record. In 2026 the pace only picked up, with the launch of Cam Up Live (TimIdo), the Stage Zero label, and a run of mixtapes rolling out one by one with several major artists, the most recent arriving with Chloe Bailey.

More than a producer. A founder.

Mosley Music Group (2006). Verzuz (2020). Beatclub (2021). Timbaland Way Cares, a 501(c)(3) non-profit (2025). The beat was only the beginning. Tim has spent the last two decades building institutions, not just hits, each one designed to outlast the moment and open doors for the next generation.

07

Why This Matters

Creativity was never meant to be kept to oneself. Through Timbaland Way Cares, Timbaland is dedicated to creating access for the next generation of artists and innovators, offering mentorship, resources, and real opportunities to those whose gifts deserve to be seen, nurtured, and developed.

Timbaland's signature

"Because true legacy is not measured only by personal success, but by the lives inspired and the doors opened along the way. The most meaningful record Timbaland may ever help create is not simply one the world hears, but one that empowers someone else to find their voice."
